★ PERSONALITY

If there ever was a man whose base descriptor might be a contradiction in terms, Leonard McCoy would be that man. What you have to understand about McCoy is that if you wanted to sum him up into two words you'd probably call him a misanthropic humanist. Or you'd call him a cynical humanist. Either way, you have two opposing parts that make one very unique whole and both of those descriptions show you the most important part of McCoy with the word humanist. McCoy may hate 99 percent of the universe and maybe 50 percent of it hates him, but that's not about to stop him from helping that universe in the only way he knows how. Of course, you just probably won't appreciate how he's acting while he does it. He's hard to get along with and is of the belief that the universe exists to make his life hard and annoy him. It's something he really appreciates, because that is just what he wants to deal with day in and day out.

McCoy is a man who's lived, he's not some kid fresh out college, Starfleet or medical school. He's a man who's seen how the world works and he knows it sucks. If you want to believe that the world is sunshine and roses and everything is fantastic, that's fine. You're just maybe an idiot. McCoy doesn't really enjoy optimism, it's the thing that more often than not is worse than any sort of pessimism or realism because it gets your hopes up. When those hopes are dashed you end up feeling worse and he doesn't like to see people feel like that. It's better to just burst your bubble now than let it be burst later.

That makes it sound like he's a pessimistic, but make no mistake, while McCoy is ready to burst your optimism bubble, he's really just a realist. As was said before, McCoy's a person who's lived a life that hasn't been kind so far to him. He knows the depths of how nasty and horrible people can be and knows how trying the universe can be. It doesn't stop him from wanting to save parts of it and wanting to do what he can to make it just that little bit better. However, he knows he's can't fix everything and that not everything can be fixed by some country doctor. Sometimes someone has to die and sometimes life just sucks and it's out of your hands. In his eyes if you're not prepared to know something might go wrong, then you're gonna get crushed by what happens to you later on. He doesn't want that to happen to anyone even if it would teach you a lesson. No one needs to have the universe come tumbling down around them.

All that being said though, McCoy isn't the type to sugarcoat things. Part of it is how he grew up, but another part of it is the fact that he's a realist. He'll tell you something like it is and maybe you won't like it, sure, but you need to hear it. The only time that his metaphorical kid gloves to cushion things are put on are when he's actually talking to kids. The rest of the time if you ask him his opinion on something you better be prepared to hear the unfiltered truth given to you with a straight face. Even if you don't ask his opinion on something he'll still give it to you if he thinks he needs to. If you prove him wrong about what he said then he'll accept it and metaphorically tip his hat to you for doing it.

There's a stubbornness within McCoy that is the reason he survived and in a way thrived through what would have maybe made other people fall to pieces. Things have sucked for him but he'd be damned if all that ended in him falling down and taking it. Even beyond that, McCoy sticks to his guns and doesn't let people push him around. Yes, he's not the captain and yes he's only a lieutenant commander, but it won't stop him from doing what he thinks is right. If you don't like it, tough.

For all that McCoy is a misanthrope and does hate so much of the universe, he also cares very deeply for people and is capable of being a fully functioning human being who can hold a semi-pleasant conversation at least. Granted, he doesn't always have pleasant interactions with people as any of his interactions with Spock would show but he is capable of trying. He's not the complete disaster he could be when it comes to interacting with others. He is capable of making friends and liking people even if he doesn't like all of their actions most of the time. When he makes those friends he's loyal to the core and will do anything for them. He'll break the Prime Directive, he'll break the laws of nature and he'll basically bend over backwards to make sure they're okay. He's lost enough things in his life and there's no reason he needs to lose any more if he can help it. And if you ever needed an example of that, look no further than James Tiberius Kirk. Kirk is McCoy's best friend and consequently he's also the person McCoy will bend the rules for the most and he's also the person McCoy wants to keep alive the most. It's shown in how McCoy takes him onto the Enterprise in Star Trek and how he stands up for Kirk when he's marooned and in Into the Darkness when he goes with him to the planet and when he brings him back to life. However, the most telling part of him being Kirk back to life is his reaction when he sees that Kirk is dead. He would be sad and frustrated if anyone on the Enterprise died because his job to help them, but with Kirk he's crushed. He failed his best friend when his best friend needed him the most, but then there's the chance to save him and he charges into action. Does he have to defy the laws of nature and maybe do something most people wouldn't? Yes, but it saved Kirk and brought him back to life. He'll take it as a job well done and be thankful he's alive.

That situation right there is why you'd use the title misanthropic humanist for McCoy. Sure, he hates the universe so much for what it does and he dislikes how people act and how they can all be so stupid. But he cares about people so very deeply. He won't care about the logic or the statistics that say someone dying is acceptable because in his mind because to him there isn't a time when that is acceptable. The only acceptable thing is what the morally right thing to do and damn whatever gets in the way of that, be it orders or the Prime Directive or whatever the hell Spock's advocating.

In short, Leonard McCoy is a man who knows who he is and nothing can change that. If you don't like who he is, fine, just as long as you let him do his job or what he thinks is right. Because if you don't? Well, the verbal lashing you were getting before will be like child's play and he'll still do what he wants to do anyway.

★ COURT ALLIANCE: Seelie! First off, I generally categorize McCoy as a Chaotic Good, if only because he doesn't fall under the practical complete goodness that a Lawful Good falls under and is a little too different to fall under Neutral Good. Beyond that however, so much of McCoy's being is tied up in being a doctor and while he is gruff and maybe not the nicest person to get along with all of the time, he's still inherently good and any bad things he does are because he thinks they're the right thing to do and not because he just wants to do the potentially bad thing.

★ ABILITIES: With the exception of being a very talented medical doctor and getting the general training a Starfleet officer enjoys in Starfleet, no abilities at all.

★ INVENTORY:
One ( 1 ) Starfleet Academy Ring
One ( 1 ) pair of Starfleet issued pants
One ( 1 ) stardard Starfleet science blue shirt
One ( 1 ) black Starfleet issued shirt
One ( 1 ) Starfleet comm badge ( that totally doesn't work outside the station, way to go Starfleet )
